Located 15 kilometers southwest of Haikou, Shishan is one of the dormant volcano clusters that erupted about 10,000 years ago. It has a double cone shape with north and south peaks and is hollow in the middle. After visiting the park, re-board your vehicle for the short trip to Rongtangcun, an abandoned village built entirely of lava mined from the area’s extensive supplies. Now deserted, the village holds a unique charm with narrow streets and courtyards from which you can almost hear the voices of long dead inhabitants. Finally, explore the 72 lava tunnel caves, a unique geological formation caused by molten lava from the ancient volcano eruption flowing through the softer limestone of the natural landscape.
