West Island is known as "Turtle Island" or "West Hawsksbill Island" (a kind of large turtle) from local folklore. It is the largest of a series of small islands located off Sanya. Home to fishing tribes for generations, its idyllic surroundings of sandy beaches, rocky coves, and an interior filled with palm trees are now being discovered by domestic and foreign tourists alike scenery and historical sites. This excellent environment is regarded as the reason the city's citizens enjoy the highest average life expectancy (over 74 years) in all of China.

West Island is a 10 min. boat trip away from the Pearl Harbor Port in Sanya. The island is in the tropical sea monsoon climate. It is sunny and seems that spring always exists all the year round. On the island, there exist beauty spots, fresh air, crystal clear water and soft sand. Over 3000 people live on the island leading a life by fishing for generations. It was Mr. Chen Mingzhe from Taiwan , who invested 100 Million Yuan to develop this precious island. Now travel services, sightseeing, holiday, food, shopping, sports and recreation are available. It is said that longtime ago the prince of the South Sea dragon king tortured and killed many fishermen to make an elixir for long living. It was a hard time for the fisher villages and many fishermen were afraid to go out for fishing. Some, who were brave enough and went fishing, didn't return home. Many families suffered hunger and so they prayed and pour out their troubles to the heaven. Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy answered to their claims and sent from the heaven two powerful holy turtles to safeguard the South Sea. The dragon prince wasn't a match for these turtles and gave up the idea to find the formula for the immortality elixir. From then on, the fishermen lived and worked in peace and contentment, leading a happy life. After thousand of years, the two holy turtle were piled by flying stones and sands, and became the present East and West Island.

A speed boat departs from Sanya bay and is available morning to evening. It is a 10 minute ride to West Island, which is one of the best destinations for diving and water sports in Hainan . If you like diving, there are crystal clear waters with a wide array of marine life and extensive coral reefs to explore. The diving instructors are internationally (PADI) certified, and the diving club offers a full range of rental equipment.

If you want an adrenaline rush, try out one of these: jet-skiing, motorboats, banana boats, water skiing. If you want to relax, take a break in the shade of the coconut trees, enjoy the tropical breeze, and savour some very fresh seafood at one of the island's restaurants. In addition to water sports, visitors to West Island can enjoy the salt water pool, camping and barbecue facilities, or test their skill on the archery range.
