Coconut Groves & Specialties
Located in the north of Hainan Island, Wenchang City has a total area of 2,403 km2 and a population of 520,000. Wenchang City borders on the sea in the east, south and north and adjoins Qiongshan City and Ding'an County in the west and Qionghai City in the southwest. It has been more than 2000 years that people live and work in the area where Wenchang City is located now.
It is the hometown of many overseas Chinese, of culture and the charming scenery of coconut forest. Wenchang is rich in tropical tourist resources, boasting 20 famous scenic spots and historical sites. To mention a few, they are the marvellous Tonggu Ridge , the beautiful Dongjiao Coconut Groves, the white-sand bathing beach at Gaolong Bay, the Mangrove Forest, the Confucius Temple. The pleasing food of the local cooking includes seafood and the famous Wenchang Chicken. It takes about 30 minutes by car from Haikou to Wenchang.
Dongjiao Yelin (Coconut Grove)
Dongjiao Coconut Grove is one of the most famous scenic spots in Hainan Province. The local people say: "Wenchang produces half of the coconuts in Hainan while Dongjiao does half of the coconuts in Wenchang." Over 500,000 coconut trees of many different varieties grow in Dongjiao.
Dongzaigang Mangrove Natural Reserve
The Dongzaigang Mangrove Natural Reserve is a unique evergreen bush or arbor plant community existing in tropical and sub-tropical seaside intertidal zones. While there exist 81 kinds of mangroves which belong to 23 families worldwide, there are 29 species of mangroves that belong to 16 families in Hainan. In Dongzai Port only, there exist 19 kinds of mangroves that belong to 12 families. In autumn and winter seasons, various kinds of migratory birds come to the mangrove forest in an endless stream, making the forest full of life.
Song Qingling's Home
It is the Gulu Yuan Village, Changsa Town, Wenchang City. Sitting at hillside and surrounded with fruit trees and other lush and green plants, the house and its surroundings are very placid.
Tonggu Ridge Scenic Area
Located by the seaside of Longlou Town in the east of Wenchang City, the Tonggu Hill looks like a tiger crouching on the ground. It is known as the First Hill in East Hainan.
Confucian Temple
A trip to Wenchang would not be complete without a quick stop at the Confucian Temple. Located in downtown Wenchang, the temple is an oasis of tranquillity in the city.
