On Hainan Island, people live together in harmony.

Their cultural life is varied, colorful and features lots of simple customs. Like people in other parts of China, they enjoy the Spring Festival, the Lantern Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival. In addition, Hainan's major festivals also include some local ones like the examples below.

Flower-Exchange-Festival: February.

On the 15th day of the first lunar month every year, the Fucheng Town of Qiongshan City is immersed in a sea of flowers. When the street lights are turned on, people go out on the streets and start presenting flowers to each other as a gift with best wishes for the New Year.

International Coconut Festival: March & April.

This event is a comprehensive public occasion that Hainan province has adopted to promote economic and cultural interaction with international communities.

Junpo Festival: March & April.

A large-scale activity held by people of different districts in Hainan for the purpose of commemorating a national heroine called Madam Xian. This legendary figure contributed a great deal to the development and the national unity of Hainan.

Sanyuesan Festival: April.

Traditionally, this was a special occasion for the unmarried young men and women of the Li and Miao minorities to celebrate new life and pray for love and happiness. Today it has become a public ceremony for all the Li and Miao people. On this occasion they entertain themselves and their guests with singing, dancing and sporting activities.

Danzhou Sing-Along: October.

The young men and women in the northern part of Danzhou City regard the Moon Festival in October as the best day to pray for love and happiness. Since they consider songs the best way to express their feelings, on festival day they go up to a nearby hill - men on one side and women on the other - and sing. Each singer has a challenger of opposite sex. When both of them are satisfied with each other's singing, a love story has hopefully begun.

International Wedding: 18-21st of November.

Couples from all over the world will gather at the famous Tianya Haijiao - near Sanya city - to celebrate their new marriage or wedding anniversary. When used to refer to love and marriage, Tianya Haijiao in Chinese implies an eternal relationship.
